Meet Amy Baker, DVM, DACVO

There's a moment every veterinarian knows — a pet in the exam room with an eye that doesn't look right, and the quiet uncertainty of not knowing whether to treat, wait, or refer. Dr. Amy Baker built Visionary Veterinary Consulting for exactly that moment.

Her path here wasn't a straight line — and that turns out to matter. She began with a degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of North Carolina, the study of how people work, lead, and learn, before finding her way into veterinary medicine and ultimately into one of its most precise and demanding subspecialties. That foundation in human understanding, layered over deep clinical expertise, is what makes her a dynamic specialist.

After completing a general medicine/surgery internship and a specialty ophthalmology/oncology internship at Florida Veterinary Specialists, she completed a residency in comparative ophthalmology at the University of Florida under the mentorship of the original pioneers in the field. She has spent nearly two decades working across the full spectrum of veterinary medicine — referral hospitals, specialty practices, academia, and industry, including a role as veterinary director for a pet food company where she led R&D and produced educational content. She has published original research in equine ophthalmology, served as educational director for a large multi-practice ophthalmology group, and is a sought-after continuing education speaker known for making the notoriously intimidating world of ocular disease approachable, memorable, and even fun.

What she found, across all of it, is that practitioners don't need a referral form and a wait. They need a trusted colleague who responds within hours with clear, actionable guidance they can use quickly — in their own practice, for their patient. That's what she built. That's what VVC is here for.

Outside the clinic, she lives with a menagerie of flat faced cats and Pekingese dogs (turns out that ophthalmology experience comes in handy at home as well!). She rides horses, hunts antiques, and restores older homes with an obsessive eye for proportion and color. She believes that a well-lived life and a rigorous professional standard are not in conflict. They are, in fact, the same thing.

What we stand for.

The beliefs behind everything we do at Visionary Veterinary Consulting

Excellence & Education

Every veterinarian deserves specialist-level insight — not someday, but now.

Ophthalmology has a reputation for being intimidating. We think that's a failure of education, not a reflection of the specialty. Our commitment is to deliver not just answers but understanding — so every case you send us makes you a sharper clinician than you were before you sent it. We measure our success by yours.

Clarity & Practicality

You need guidance you can act on in the next ten minutes — not a textbook.

When a patient presents and you're not sure what you're looking at, nuance is not what you need. You need clear, specific, actionable next steps — and that's exactly what we provide. We don't hedge. We don't overwhelm. We tell you what we see, what it likely means, and what to do about it.

Collaboration & Support

We're not replacing your judgment. We're standing behind it.

A consult with VVC isn't a handoff — it's a partnership. You know your patient. You know your practice. We know eyes. Together, that's a better outcome than either of us reaches alone. We work with you, not around you, and we never make you feel like you should have known something you weren't trained to

know.

Integrity & Transparency

No surprise fees. No ego.

We charge what we say we charge. We recommend what the patient needs, dictated by years in the trenches. And if the honest answer is that this case doesn't require specialist intervention, we'll tell you that too — because your trust is worth more to us than a single consult fee. That's the only way this works long-term, and long-term is exactly what we're building together.
